(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Starting in 2025, parents in Blaenau Gwent (Wales, UK) who have not yet taught their children how to use the potty will be called to school by teachers to change their children's diapers themselves.
This regulation was introduced to give kindergarten teachers more time for classroom activities. Luisa Munro-Morris, head of education management in Blaenau Gwent County, said that kindergarten teachers' frequent diaper changes negatively impacted the quality of teaching.
Starting in 2025, only preschool children who absolutely need diapers for health reasons will receive diaper-changing assistance from teachers in Blaenau Gwent County. This regulation has been positively received by preschool teachers in Blaenau Gwent County, but some parents disagree.

Around one-third of British children start preschool without having basic skills such as potty training (Illustrative image: Daily Mail).
"Every child develops at a different pace. Some children, even those old enough to attend preschool and taught potty training by their parents, still haven't developed the habit of independently using the toilet. We hope that teachers will be understanding and supportive in this regard," a parent shared.
Some other parents also expressed concerns that if they live far away, it would take a long time to get to school to change their child's diapers, which could affect the child's health.
Laura Doel, head of the Wales Teachers' Association, shared: "Headteachers in Wales have reported an increasing number of preschool children starting school without basic skills. This is significantly impacting teachers' teaching."
Laura Doel said the Wales Teachers Association applauds the decisive action taken by the Blaenau Gwent county authorities to support kindergarten teachers.
According to a survey conducted this year by the Centre for Children in England, around one-third of children in England start preschool without having acquired basic skills such as potty training, stopping the use of pacifiers, or knowing how to listen to and follow simple teacher instructions.
