HA TINH - Never before has the price of crisp oranges in Thuong Loc (Can Loc, Ha Tinh ) been as high as this year. At the beginning of the season, the price of crisp oranges is currently from 70,000 to 90,000 VND/kg, double compared to the same period last year.

HA TINH - Never before has the price of crisp oranges in Thuong Loc (Can Loc, Ha Tinh) been as high as this year. At the beginning of the season, the price of crisp oranges is currently from 70,000 to 90,000 VND/kg, double compared to the same period last year.

Early season oranges are priced double that of last year.

In the early days of November of the lunar calendar each year, the hillsides of Thuong Loc commune, Can Loc district (Ha Tinh province) are ablaze with ripe oranges, and orange growers are busily harvesting their specialty crunchy oranges after a year of care. This year, the crunchy orange crop is abundant, and the selling price is high, so the orange growers are extremely happy.

Mr. Phan Cong Son's family in Nam Phong village (Thuong Loc commune) currently has over 200 citrus trees that are already producing fruit, and they estimate a harvest of over 10 tons this year. Mr. Son said that the price of citrus oranges has never been as high as this year. Currently, at the beginning of the season, the price ranges from 70,000 to 90,000 VND/kg, double that of last year.

According to Mr. Son, the crispy orange tree is resistant to cold, drought, and pests, and especially produces uniform fruit that does not crack under any harsh weather conditions in Central Vietnam. One crispy orange tree yields 2-3 times more income than a regular orange tree. Therefore, this year his family has expanded the planting area to 300-500 new crispy orange trees.

On her nearly 5-hectare hillside orchard, Bui Thi Thu's family (Thuong Loc commune) has planted many varieties of oranges such as lemon oranges and pomelo oranges... but after experimenting with growing crunchy oranges, Ms. Thu realized that this variety yields the highest economic value. Currently, Ms. Thu's orchard has more than 400 crunchy orange trees that are already producing fruit, yielding 15-20 tons of fruit annually.

This year, thanks to favorable weather conditions and the adoption of organic and safe farming practices, orange yields have increased by over 20%, and quality has also improved significantly. Photo: Anh Nguyet.

According to Ms. Thu, the wholesale price of oranges at the beginning of the season is quite high, starting from 70,000 VND and up. Therefore, her family has already started pruning ripe oranges and offering them to traders, saving the rest for the Lunar New Year, when the selling price will be even higher. Ms. Thu said that this year, thanks to favorable weather and organic, safe production methods, orange yields have increased by over 20%, and the quality has also improved. After deducting expenses, her family estimates a profit of nearly 1 billion VND.

"4-star cameras" come with exorbitant prices.

When mentioning Thượng Lộc crispy oranges, it's impossible not to talk about Trà Sơn Cooperative and its Xuân Hòa crispy oranges, which have achieved OCOP 4-star certification.

According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hoa, Director of Tra Son Cooperative, the cooperative currently has 12 members with over 15 hectares of orange orchards meeting OCOP 4-star standards. In addition, it collaborates with 69 orange-growing households in the Tra Son region (Can Loc district) on over 100 hectares of land for production and consumption. Each year, the cooperative supplies more than 500 tons of crisp oranges to the market. Currently, the cooperative sells 2-3 tons of crisp oranges daily at 90,000 VND/kg. The price is expected to reach 120,000 VND/kg during the New Year and up to 150,000 VND/kg during the Lunar New Year.

Speaking about the production process and building the Xuân Hòa crispy orange brand to stand firm in the market with a much higher selling price than other types of oranges, Mr. Hòa enthusiastically shared: "To have a clean product, our cooperative produces according to a 100% organic process, using only microbial fertilizers, well-rotted manure, and biological pest control."

Once the oranges reach the optimal ripeness, they are harvested, then treated with ozone to remove impurities, and finally rinsed with Can Loc glutinous rice wine before being packed and delivered to customers. Thanks to this process, Xuan Hoa oranges have a distinctive aroma, delicious taste, and sweetness that other orange varieties lack.

According to Ms. Phan Thi Hien, a long-time orange grower in Thuong Loc commune, the crisp oranges are spherical, have smooth skin, are smaller than lemons, and turn bright yellow when ripe. Crispy oranges weigh an average of 250-350 grams per fruit. Notably, ripe oranges have a rich, sweet flavor and a very appealing aroma; they are refreshing and crisp when eaten. Furthermore, crisp oranges are juicy, have few seeds and fibers, and both the segments and juice are yellow. Famous for their quality, beautiful appearance, and uniform size, Thuong Loc crisp oranges have been a popular gift choice for holidays and Tet (Vietnamese New Year) for many years.

Ms. Phan Thi Anh Tuyet, who works in Ha Tinh city, said she often chooses to buy crispy oranges as gifts during Tet (Lunar New Year) and for her family to enjoy. Although the price is higher than other types of oranges, the quality is undeniable.

According to local orange growers, Thượng Lộc crisp oranges were first grown in the Trà Sơn area (Can Lộc district) nearly 20 years ago. Initially, they were grown on a small scale, with limited quantities and inconsistent quality. In recent years, recognizing the superior quality and economic value of crisp oranges, and with the support and assistance from various levels of government in Hà Tĩnh province, the Thượng Lộc crisp orange brand has expanded significantly. The scale of Thượng Lộc crisp orange cultivation has grown considerably, and the orchards have received more systematic investment in irrigation, fertilization, and cultivation techniques. As a result, both the yield and quality of the crisp oranges have increased considerably.

In particular, on January 9, 2017, the Intellectual Property Office (Ministry of Science and Technology) issued Decision No. 1016/QD-SHTT granting a certificate of protection for the "Thuong Loc Orange" certification mark to the People's Committee of Can Loc District. Thanks to this, Thuong Loc crispy oranges have increasingly affirmed their position in the market both within and outside the province.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hai, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thuong Loc commune, this year, thanks to favorable weather conditions and the people's systematic investment in cultivation, the orange yield was high, reaching nearly 1,900 tons for the entire commune, generating tens of billions of dong in economic value. In particular, this year's orange harvest saw significantly higher prices at the beginning of the season compared to previous years (lemon oranges priced at 30,000 - 40,000 dong/kg, and crisp oranges at 60,000 - 90,000 dong/kg). This year, the orange harvest was both abundant and the prices were good, making the people very happy. Therefore, orange trees have become a crop that helps local people escape poverty and provides a decent income.

Thuong Loc commune has nearly 600 households growing citrus fruits, including crisp oranges, on an area of over 200 hectares, of which over 120 hectares are planted with crisp oranges. Photo: Anh Nguyet.

"To encourage and motivate people to plant new and replant orange trees, the local government has provided support at a rate of 15,000 VND/tree for concentrated planting models of 50 trees or more, aiming to consolidate and develop the Thuong Loc orange brand and increase income for the people," emphasized the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thuong Loc commune.

Currently, Thuong Loc commune has nearly 600 households growing citrus fruits, including crisp oranges, mainly concentrated in Anh Hung, Thanh My, Nam Phong, and Son Binh villages, covering an area of over 200 hectares, of which over 120 hectares are planted with crisp oranges. This is also one of the localities with the largest citrus growing area in Can Loc district.
