In recent days, images of Mr. Hoang Van Viet, the principal of Quang Vinh Primary School (Quang Vinh commune, Trung Khanh district, Cao Bang province) , swimming to the flooded school have attracted widespread attention . Mr. Viet's actions took place amidst a historic flood in Cao Bang province in general and Quang Vinh commune in particular, with many houses submerged up to their roofs, and schools and health centers also in dire straits.
On the morning of August 29th, in an interview with VietNamNet , Mr. Hoang Van Viet stated: “When I visited the school on August 24th, it had already been flooded, with water levels reaching approximately 1.5 meters. The scene before me was of the school's infrastructure submerged in a vast expanse of water. Among the flooded items was over a ton of rice, completely unusable.”
According to Mr. Viet, from the 24th until now, he and the teaching staff have continuously visited the school to assess the situation. Specifically on August 26th, the school recorded a peak flood level of 3.5 meters.

Born and raised in Trung Khanh district, Mr. Viet has spent nearly 30 years teaching and working in his hometown.
“I grew up and dedicated myself to my homeland, so I understand the hardships faced by teachers and students in the highlands. I understand the plight of floods and inundations, so when the water rose, I traveled 40km to assess the situation at the school. Seeing the school grounds turned into a sea of water, I decided to swim in to check. I was truly very worried at that moment,” Mr. Viet recalled.
Ms. Chu Thi Vinh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Trung Khanh District, said: "By this morning (August 29), the water had receded at Quang Vinh Primary School, and teachers could walk to school. Authorities are currently assessing the damage, and the district is reinforcing its resources to help the school quickly restore its facilities in time for the opening ceremony of the new school year."
