According to observations by Thanh Nien reporters, at noon on February 9th (the 30th day of the 12th lunar month), the fields in Nghia Ha commune ( Quang Ngai city), considered the largest area for growing gladiolus and chrysanthemums in Quang Ngai province, were gloomy and deserted. Flower growers are facing a year of losses.
Gladiolus flowers are blooming all over the fields, but there's no one to harvest them because the market is very slow.
The number of flowers that bloom just in time for Tet (Lunar New Year) can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Out of every 10 trees, 9 bloom early.
As Tet (Vietnamese New Year) approaches, some farmers go to the fields to gather flowers that have just begun to bud to sell to traders.
According to one flower farmer, a dozen gladiolus plants sell for 40,000-50,000 VND depending on the quality of the flowers. With an average investment cost of about 20 million VND per sao (approximately 1000 square meters), this is the fourth year that gladiolus growers in Nghia Ha have suffered losses due to the weather.
Just like the gladiolus growers, chrysanthemum growers are also disheartened by the lack of buyers. Instead of being sold during Tet (Lunar New Year), these flowers remain in the fields until the 30th day of the lunar month.
Mr. Vo Hong Duong said that chrysanthemum plants are currently priced at around 1,000 VND per plant, but there are no buyers. In previous years, at this time, the price would have been 5,000 - 6,000 VND per plant.
Nghia Ha commune is a famous Tet flower village in Quang Ngai province. Every year, dozens of hectares of land are dedicated by households to growing gladiolus, chrysanthemums, and various vegetables to supply the Tet market.
