(CLO) The Azerbaijani plane crash in Kazakhstan on December 25, 2024, which killed 38 people and injured 29 others, is attracting global attention.

Brazil, which built the crashed plane, is working with three other countries – Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russia – to investigate the cause of the incident.

The Brazilian Air Force announced late Thursday that a total of nine foreign experts had joined the investigation team in the country's capital, Brasilia. They are analyzing data from the plane's black boxes and other supporting instruments.

The Brazilian Air Force has pledged to carry out the process "in the shortest possible time". However, the results of the investigation will be made public by the Kazakh authorities when completed.

The Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 departed from the capital Baku and was scheduled to land in Grozny, Russia. However, the plane diverted to Kazakhstan and crashed near the city of Aktau while attempting to land.

Azerbaijan Airlines said on December 27 that the cause of the accident was "physical and technical interference".

The incident was complicated when Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev claimed that the plane had been shot down by Russia unintentionally. Mr Aliyev said that the plane was attacked from the ground in Russian airspace and "lost control due to electronic warfare".

On the Russian side, Dmitry Yadrov, head of the Federal Air Transport Agency, presented a different scenario. Accordingly, Russia announced that the plane crash occurred in the context of a drone attack by Ukraine in Grozny, the intended landing location of the plane.

Russian President Vladimir Putin apologized to Mr. Aliyev on December 28, but did not admit direct responsibility. Mr. Putin called it "an unfortunate incident that occurred in Russian airspace."

President Aliyev strongly criticized Russia's handling of the incident, accusing Moscow of deliberately concealing information: "Unfortunately, for the first three days, we received only vague statements from Russia."

Russia still denies the accusations, affirming that it did not use military equipment to harm the Azerbaijani plane.

The investigation is still ongoing, with four countries taking part. Experts hope that data from the black boxes will shed light on the cause of the crash and determine whether the accusations against Russia are well-founded.
