On February 24, at least 20 people were killed and many others injured after a tractor-trailer carrying them overturned and plunged into a lake in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
According to Indian police, the accident occurred in Kasganj district, 266km northwest of Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow, when the vehicle was carrying people to Kadarganj district to perform a ritual bath in the Ganges River.
A local health official said 22 people were killed and 10 injured who were being treated at various hospitals in the area. Most of the victims were women and children.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of the victims and announced financial assistance to the affected families.
Preliminary investigation shows that the tractor-trailer overturned when the driver tried to overtake another vehicle.
Every year there are about 500,000 road traffic accidents in India, claiming the lives of 150,000 people.
