According to Android Police , TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, has unexpectedly launched a new app called Whee, considered a direct competitor to Instagram. The app is now available on the Google Play Store in several countries for testing.
Whee has a simple interface with three main tabs: camera, news feed, and messages. What sets Whee apart from Instagram is its "friends-only" photo sharing feature, creating a more private space for users.
ByteDance's new Whee app aims to dethrone Instagram.
However, this move by ByteDance has left many wondering, as the company recently launched TikTok Notes, an app with similar features to Instagram. It remains unclear why ByteDance developed two separate apps instead of integrating the "friends-only" feature into Notes.
Whether Whee will be released globally remains to be seen. This could just be a test launch, and it's possible ByteDance will stop developing the app before it reaches a wider audience.
Whee's emergence also demonstrates ByteDance's ambition to expand its social media market share, directly competing with giants like Meta (the parent company of Instagram and Facebook). However, whether Whee can create a new sensation like TikTok once did remains to be seen.
