Former US President Donald Trump
Former Congressman Will Hurd became the latest candidate to join the Republican primary race on June 22nd to become the party's nominee for the 2024 US presidential election.
A week ago, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez (Florida) also joined the race. On the other hand, The New York Times reported on June 22nd that Senator Rick Scott is also considering running.
The increasingly crowded race is causing concern among Republicans that it could dilute votes that should be focused on Trump's main opponent, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and other potential candidates. As a result, Trump could once again win the party's nomination in the 2024 election.
Will indicting President Biden's son influence the 2024 US election?
"The more candidates who join the Republican presidential race, the higher Trump's chances of winning because the 'non-Trump' votes will be diluted," The Hill quoted Republican strategist Ford O'Connell as saying.
To date, a total of 12 candidates have entered the Republican primary to choose a challenger to Democratic President Joe Biden. National and local polls show Trump consistently leading the Republican race, with DeSantis in second place.
"Every person who joins the race who isn't Donald Trump is vying for the limited number of Republican votes, further 'fragmenting' the number of votes each candidate could receive," Rick Wilson, co-founder of the Lincoln Project against Trump, told The Hill . Wilson warned that this would put people like DeSantis, or former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, or former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, or any other candidate, in a position of competing for votes that haven't yet been cast for Trump.
