According to China's state-run CCTV , the Chinese coast guard provided no further information, but this is the latest incident between the two countries at this disputed coral reef in the South China Sea.
Beijing and Manila have clashed repeatedly in recent months at the shoal, which China also claims. Both have accused each other of aggressive activities there, and the Philippines recently summoned a Chinese diplomat to protest the actions.
According to Reuters , China and the Philippines have previously stated they would seek better communication and management around clashes in the vast South China Sea, but tensions have escalated recently, particularly after the Philippines established stronger diplomatic and military ties with the United States.
In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled that China's claims and territorial assertions in many areas of the South China Sea have no legal basis.
In another development, the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration announced on the morning of April 30 that Chinese military operations would be conducted in a part of the East China Sea from 7:00 AM on May 1 to 9:00 AM on May 9.
Vessels not involved in these activities are prohibited from entering the area.
