This morning, February 8, information from the Department of Foreign Affairs said that the unit had issued a press release about the temporary suspension of programs and projects receiving funding from the US Government in Quang Tri province.

Many programs and projects funded by the US Government in Quang Tri have had to temporarily suspend operations.

Accordingly, the US Government requires foreign non-governmental organizations receiving funding from the US Government, including the US Department of State and the US Agency for International Development (USAID), to suspend operations for 90 days, starting from January 25, 2025, to conduct assessment and review. This decision applies globally, including Quang Tri province.

It is known that Quang Tri has active non-governmental projects related to surveying and mine clearance funded by the US Department of State through the following organizations: Mine Advisory Group (MAG), Norwegian People's Aid (NPA), PeaceTrees Vietnam (PTVN) and the project to support people with disabilities and victims of Agent Orange/dioxin from non-refundable ODA aid from USAID.

These projects play an important role in overcoming the consequences of war in the province, resolving the contamination of mines and bombs left over from the war, contributing to the liberation of land for livelihood development, ensuring safety for the community and society; supporting people with disabilities, Agent Orange/dioxin victims to integrate into the community, improve their livelihoods, access rehabilitation services... and creating jobs for more than 1,000 workers in the province working in the above non-governmental organizations.

The temporary suspension of the above programs and projects will directly impact important goals in overcoming the consequences of bombs and mines in Quang Tri province, including the Action Program to overcome the consequences of post-war bombs and mines in the period 2016-2025; piloting the "Safe Province" criteria set towards official application in the whole province in the period after 2025 and creating a safe living environment for people.

In this situation, the Department of Foreign Affairs of Quang Tri province is actively exchanging information closely and promptly with relevant international organizations and partners to promptly advise the Provincial People's Committee to send a document to the US Embassy in Vietnam, requesting the US Government and relevant agencies, including the US Department of State, to consider continuing to fund the implementation of humanitarian programs and projects in Quang Tri province to help the locality soon achieve safety goals in overcoming the consequences of bombs and mines and contribute to sustainable development.

It is known that the decision to temporarily suspend the above activities was made after the statement of the new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on his first working day, when he announced that the suspension of foreign aid was entirely to focus on the national interests of the United States and in accordance with the decree of US President Donald Trump on evaluating and adjusting foreign aid.
