The Thac Hai archaeological site, located in Hamlet 6, Ia Jloi Commune, Ea Sup District, Dak Lak Province, was discovered in early 2020. The Dak Lak Museum collaborated with the National Museum of History to conduct two excavations in 2021 and 2022. These excavations yielded many valuable and unique artifacts, some of which were found for the first time in the Central Highlands; among them the "Thac Hai Stone Drill Bit Collection," which was recognized as a National Treasure in 2023.
Overall analysis indicates that the Thac Hai site dates back approximately 4,000-2,000 years ago, spanning over 1,000 years, from the Late Neolithic to the Iron Age. This is a complex site, serving as a residential area, a burial ground, and a large-scale drill manufacturing workshop.
During the third excavation, conducted from the end of June to the end of July this year, nearly 1,400 artifacts were collected from a single excavation pit of approximately 20 square meters, including grinding stones, whetstones, grinding stones, axes, adzes, chisels, numerous tool fragments, stone knives, drill bits, etc. Notably, for the first time, spinning rods, many fragments of partially and fully drilled jewelry, and broken pieces were found, suggesting the possibility of stone jewelry production activities in the area.
“This third excavation yielded two new discoveries: a drill bit and strings of beads. These new findings once again confirm that the Thac Hai drill bit collection and other newly discovered artifacts demonstrate a rich and prosperous life and civilization that has existed for a long time in this region,” said Mr. Lai Duc Dai, Deputy Director of the Dak Lak Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
