According to statistics from the Vietnam Maritime Administration, in the five-year period from 2019-2023, the volume of goods passing through Quy Nhon seaport showed an upward trend. Specifically, in 2019, the volume of goods passing through Quy Nhon seaport reached over 8.8 million tons, and by 2023, it had increased to over 10 million tons. Along with this, the number of larger vessels entering and leaving the seaport also increased, from 204 vessels in 2019 to 217 vessels in 2023.

According to the Vietnam Maritime Administration, Quy Nhon port currently has a system of wharves that are adequately equipped to safely receive vessels with a tonnage exceeding the design load limit. The Quy Nhon maritime channel is short, has been upgraded and expanded, and is equipped with a maritime signaling system that meets the requirements for 24/7 vessel navigation. In addition, the Quy Nhon Maritime Port Authority has been equipped with a VTS (Vehicle-to-Track) traffic management and coordination system, facilitating safe management throughout the area. Besides the existing wharves that are permitted to receive vessels with a tonnage exceeding the design load limit, after an initial upgrade, Quy Nhon Port Joint Stock Company has also completed and put into operation wharf No. 1, with a length of 480m. This is considered an advantage for receiving vessels with large tonnages and lengths, aligning with the current trend of chartering vessels. There are advantages and benefits to accommodating large vessels for cargo handling at the port. However, according to the Project on Enhancing the Exploitation Capacity of Existing Public Maritime Infrastructure and Port Infrastructure submitted by the Vietnam Maritime Administration to the Ministry of Transport , the Quy Nhon shipping channel has not been maintained or dredged for a long time due to the lack of a suitable location for disposing of dredged material. Similarly, dredging and maintenance projects for the waters in front of the port in the area have not been carried out for many years to ensure the designed depth because no suitable location for disposing of dredged material has been found. Meanwhile, if dredged and upgraded, Quy Nhon Port would be fully equipped to accommodate vessels with a deadweight tonnage of up to 70,000 DWT for cargo handling. According to the Transport Newspaper's investigation, the Ministry of Transport has now approved the investment project to renovate and upgrade the Quy Nhon channel for 50,000 DWT vessels. The project is managed by the Maritime Project Management Board, with a total investment of nearly 700 billion VND from the state budget in the medium-term public investment plan for the period 2021-2025. The project's scope includes a channel approximately 7,160 m long from buoy No. 0 to turning basin No. 1; a channel width of 140 m; and a channel bottom elevation of -13 m (Nautical Chart) for vessels up to 50,000 DWT (fully loaded) or larger (ensuring maritime safety); upgrading the existing turning basin in front of berth No. 1 into a shared turning basin with a diameter of 400 m to accommodate vessels up to 50,000 DWT. The project also expands the channel section with a diameter of 220m - 235m and relocates the buoy system to match the upgraded channel. The ship size is designed for vessels with a deadweight tonnage of up to 50,000 DWT.Traffic Newspaper
