The Nicobar pigeon, scientifically known as Caloenas nicobarica , is a species of pigeon distributed in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam.
This bird is notable for its brightly colored plumage, especially its long, metallic green neck, which resembles a mane. The short, white tail feathers create a unique contrast.
Nicobar pigeons live primarily in primary forests, mangrove forests, and small islands. Their main food sources are seeds, fruits, and small insects.
Due to habitat loss and illegal hunting, the number of Nicobar pigeons in the wild is declining drastically, leading to their inclusion on the list of protected species.
In Vietnam, Nicobar pigeons have been recorded in several places. Con Dao is considered one of the ideal habitats for this bird species.

According to Ms. Phan Thi Tim, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Con Dao Special Economic Zone, five Nicobar pigeons, showing signs of injury, were found and voluntarily handed over to the unit by local residents.
According to regulations, these five pigeons were supposed to be released back into their natural habitat. However, due to some individuals showing signs of injury, they were handed over to the Con Dao National Park Management Board for care. Once the individuals recover, the authorities will release them back into their natural habitat.
After receiving them, Con Dao National Park officials checked the overall health of 5 Nicobar pigeons, including 1 male and 4 female pigeons, weighing from 190-250 grams.
