School collapsed due to storm No. 5, principal worried as new school year is approaching

While students across the country are eagerly preparing to start the new school year, in Ha Tinh, after storm No. 5, many schools were left in ruins, making teachers and students worried as the new school year is approaching.

On the afternoon of August 25, storm No. 5 officially made landfall in the provinces of Ha Tinh and Nghe An with winds of level 12, gusting to level 13-14.

The storm raged for more than 10 hours, leaving serious consequences in many areas of Ha Tinh province. According to records, many houses had their roofs blown off or collapsed; trees fell, and the electrical system was severely damaged.

In particular, many schools in Ha Tinh province are preparing to start the new school year, but the storm has destroyed many items, affecting the school year's plan.

School severely damaged after storm

According to Tuoi Tre Online on the morning of August 26, at Hoa Lien Secondary School (Co Dam commune, Ha Tinh), after a night of storms, the second floor roof was completely blown down by the wind, and trees were scattered.

Hearing that the school was severely damaged after the storm, early in the morning, Ms. Hoang Thi Huong - Vice Principal of Hoa Lien Secondary School - rushed to the school to inspect and help clean up after the storm.

Entering the gate, Ms. Huong saw a scene of devastation and desolation. The school roof was blown off, the iron-framed roof covered with corrugated iron that had just been built and installed collapsed, bent and lying in disarray on the broken brick floor.

Ms. Huong said the roof above was newly built by the school last year at a cost of 400 million VND.

"We are working hard with local authorities to overcome the consequences and stabilize the situation soon, especially as the new school year is about to start," said Ms. Huong.

In the old Can Loc area (Ha Tinh province), many schools were also damaged by storm No. 5. According to Tuoi Tre Online, at Son Loc Secondary School, 8 subject classrooms were completely collapsed, 3 other classrooms had their roofs blown off, and many teaching equipment and assets such as books, computers, and televisions were damaged after the storm.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on the afternoon of August 26, Mr. Hoang The Anh - principal of Son Loc Secondary School - said that the new school year is approaching but the school collapsed, so the school currently "does not have a plan" to cope.

"The new school year is coming, it will start in a week. After the storm, the classrooms collapsed so the school currently has no plan to ensure facilities for the new school year.

For now, we are focusing on cleaning and fixing what is available. As for the classrooms, they certainly won't be able to meet the needs of the new school year, the school may have to divide into two shifts" - Mr. Anh sighed.

Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , a leader of the Ha Tinh Department of Education and Training said that the Department is currently summarizing the damage and impact of storm No. 5 on the education sector.

According to initial statistics, storm No. 5 damaged 156 educational facilities in Ha Tinh, with estimated losses of more than 121 billion VND.

"The Department has established 4 working groups to go to schools to grasp the damage situation and the work to overcome the consequences of storm No. 5 to prepare for the new school year 2025-2026" - Ha Tinh Department of Education and Training informed.
