Currently, schools are making efforts to overcome the consequences, soon stabilize teaching and learning, and welcome students back to class.

Struggling to overcome the consequences of storms and floods

At Tan Thinh Secondary School (Phan Dinh Phung, Thai Nguyen ), floodwaters rose rapidly during the night of October 6, causing the entire first floor to be submerged. Early in the morning of October 7, the school board allowed 783 students to stay home from school to ensure safety.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai - Principal of the school, shared: Since the evening of October 6, we have mobilized teachers to raise tables and chairs, move teaching equipment to the upper floors. However, by the morning of October 8, the water continued to rise, the current was so strong that teachers could not access the school campus.

Located in Phan Dinh Phung ward, Tuc Duyen Secondary School also suffered heavy damage. Water flooded the entire first floor, many devices and computers were moved to the second floor, but fixed equipment such as televisions, tables and chairs or the council room were all submerged in water. The houses of some teachers in the area were also deeply flooded. Principal Nguyen Thi Sau was worried that the most worrying thing was not only the facilities, but also the safety of students and colleagues. When the water receded, overcoming the consequences would be very difficult.

At Na Ri Ethnic Boarding School (Na Ri Commune, Thai Nguyen), heavy rain caused the river to rise, completely cutting off the only road leading to the school. More than 270 boarding students were forced to stay on campus, unable to move outside.

“As soon as we saw the water rising, we moved all the students to the upper floors and prepared food and water. The local authorities promptly provided enough supplies for the day. However, further access was difficult due to the strong currents,” said Principal Nong Thi Tuyet.

According to information from Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Hai - Principal of Nha Trang Secondary School (Phan Dinh Phung, Thai Nguyen), since the morning of October 7, the school has allowed more than 2,200 students to take a day off; at the same time, it is ready to open its doors for affected people to take shelter. Not only high schools, but also union members and students in the area have actively participated in supporting people in flood-hit areas.

At the University of Industrial Technology (Tich Luong Ward, Thai Nguyen), the school's union members and students coordinated with the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of Tich Luong Ward and the Ward Police to cook rice, distribute drinking water, and support necessities for isolated households.

After storm No. 10, educational establishments in Lao Cai province suffered great losses. Specifically, the whole province had 65 schools damaged; including 27 kindergartens; 13 primary schools; 8 primary and secondary schools; 3 secondary schools; 11 high schools, 3 vocational education and continuing education centers. The estimated damage was about 30 billion VND and there were no human casualties.

Mr. Do Cao Quyen - Chairman of the People's Committee of Mo Vang Commune (Lao Cai) said that during the storm, educational facilities in the commune were deeply flooded, with some schools having the highest water level measured at 5.8m. The major damage was at Mo Vang Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities, all household items, books, and educational equipment were damaged or difficult to repair. In addition, Khe Long 2 Kindergarten was buried by flash floods.

In Tuyen Quang, as of October 7, there are still 26 educational establishments that have not been able to overcome the consequences of floods, and students are temporarily out of school due to inadequate facilities and unusual weather conditions.

Po Lo Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities (Thang Tin Commune) suffered a landslide at the boarding house, about 15m long, 6m deep and 5 boarding houses of the main school, causing many difficulties in ensuring safety for students.

Principal Truong Thi Hue said the school has more than 300 students, of which about 200 are boarding students. At the main school, the 5-room boarding house that collapsed is currently awaiting support from local authorities and other units. Temporarily, more than 100 students have to stay in the school library.

Many difficulties to be solved

Mr. Nguyen Quang Thanh - Principal of Lao Chai Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities (Tuyen Quang) informed that the school is being supported by the local Party Committee and government to temporarily repair the situation, arrange meals and accommodation for students in a safe area. Students' meals are still maintained, ensuring adequate nutrition and quality.

However, the biggest difficulty in boarding is arranging food, cooking, accommodation and toilets for the students. Currently, the school can only arrange 2 dormitories and 10 single rooms for over 500 students. The toilet area is completely eroded. The school hopes for the cooperation and contribution of the community to overcome the above difficulties.

“Currently, the school is making efforts to repair and renovate the old commune People's Committee headquarters. However, the traffic route to bring in equipment and materials is paralyzed, making it very difficult. The arrangement of food and accommodation for students can basically be handled and arranged, while still ensuring food safety and hygiene for the time being. It is expected that students will return to school as usual on October 13,” said Mr. Nguyen Quang Thanh.

In Lao Cai province, the total estimated damage to Mo Vang Ethnic Boarding Secondary School alone is over 2 billion VND, including: facilities, assets; teaching equipment; personal belongings of students and teachers and many other assets.

At Khe Long 2 Kindergarten, due to being completely buried by flash floods and forced to relocate, the People's Committee of Mo Vang Commune had to temporarily fix the problem by mobilizing people to rent large houses to temporarily repair the school so that 42 students could continue studying. It is known that since October 13, this temporarily rented school has been operating again.

Respond promptly to flooding

In Hanoi, as of October 8, only a few educational institutions had to temporarily suspend students from going to school and study online. Ms. Doan Thi Thanh Huong - Principal of Tay Mo Secondary School (Tay Mo Ward) said that from October 6 until now, the school has switched to online teaching because the area around the school is deeply flooded; the highest priority is the safety of teachers and students. Many households were deeply flooded and had no electricity, but teachers and students tried to overcome difficulties to maintain the learning rhythm in the context of extreme weather.

With 45 classes and 1,965 students, Mr. Nguyen Duy Binh - Principal of Dai Mo High School said that as of the morning of October 8, the area in front of the school gate was still flooded about 40cm deep. Up to now, teachers and students of the school have been teaching online to ensure safety.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thanh Ha - Principal of Tay Mo Primary School (Tay Mo Ward), from October 1 to October 8, more than 2,000 students had to switch to online learning due to the school being flooded. Many families of students and teachers of the school are located in areas deeply flooded due to heavy rain. Online teaching is organized in the evening so that parents can accompany their children and teachers.

“Because of close monitoring and prior preparation, we have proactively moved the furniture on the first floor to ensure safety. Teachers of each class have informed parents about the online class schedule and monitored their children at home. Hopefully, on October 9, teachers and parents will clean up the school together, so that we can welcome students back to class on October 10,” Ms. Nguyen Thanh Ha shared.
