This helps students gain confidence in their studies and in planning their future careers.
Supporting students in disadvantaged areas.
After completing the enrollment process for the 2025-2026 school year, Nguyen Canh Chan High School (Dai Dong, Nghe An) promptly organized counseling and guidance sessions on registering for elective subject combinations for over 400 10th-grade students. This year, Nguyen Canh Chan High School is developing orientation classes in natural sciences ; social sciences (advanced); and social sciences (basic).
For students enrolled in the natural science group, in addition to the compulsory subjects, they will study Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Science. For the two social science groups, students will take elective subjects and specialized courses including Physics, Geography, Economics and Law, and Computer Science.
Vi Tuan Hung, a Thai ethnic minority student from Son Lam commune, Nghe An province , said he scored 14.25 points and registered for his first choice in the advanced class for Group C subjects. However, the school only accepts one advanced class, and his score was quite low, so he registered for a second choice in the basic class.
During the counseling session, many parents came to enroll their children but didn't understand the new program. Mr. Trinh Xuan Nhu (Cat Ngan, Nghe An) struggled with the registration form, and only after all the students and parents had left did he go to the school's admissions office to ask the teachers to check one last time if he had filled out the information correctly.
He said he registered on behalf of his grandson, Trinh Quoc Viet, who was visiting his maternal grandparents far away. Viet's father is a factory worker in the North, and his mother is working abroad, so he has lived with his paternal grandparents since the third grade. "I'm old now and can't understand the current curriculum. My grandson called and read the information for me to fill out the form, but I'm afraid I'll make a mistake," said Mr. Trinh Xuan Nhu.
Mr. Nguyen Van Quyen, Head of the Foreign Language Department at Nguyen Canh Chan High School, who participated in the counseling team, shared that although the 2018 General Education Program has been implemented at the high school level for three years, students and parents are still unclear about their subject and career orientation. “Personally, before participating in counseling, I have to thoroughly research the university admission combinations of various schools and the trends in professions over the next 5-6 years. I need to understand what subjects students like to study, what they want to do in the future, and listen to them to provide appropriate support,” Mr. Quyen shared.
Meanwhile, at Cao Bang Provincial Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities, the school plans to enroll 175 students in grade 10 for the 2025-2026 school year. Due to the unique characteristics of a boarding school, with many students coming from remote areas, the enrollment process is expected to take place at the end of August.
Ms. Le Thi Lan Phuong, the school principal, said: “We have organized training sessions and meetings within the Admissions Council to standardize the implementation content. Teachers have been assigned to create Zalo groups according to each area to disseminate information, guide students through the enrollment procedures, and advise them on the new program as well as guidance for the high school graduation exam.”
The school clearly defines the advisory role of homeroom and subject teachers in helping students choose appropriate subject combinations. The arrangement of subject combinations is done harmoniously between natural and social sciences, ensuring students' right to choose while remaining within the school's teaching capacity.

Career-oriented training
Given the unique nature of high school education as a career-oriented phase, students register for elective subjects and specialized courses in addition to compulsory subjects. Therefore, most high schools organize counseling, guidance, and subject combination selection for 10th-grade students. Thanh Chuong 1 High School (Dai Dong, Nghe An) has been providing career-oriented education counseling on the 2018 General Education Program for junior high schools within its catchment area since the end of the 2024-2025 school year.
According to Mr. Nguyen Trieu Tien, the school principal, early career counseling for junior high school students aims to create a seamless connection between the two levels of education. "If we wait until students enter 10th grade to provide counseling, they won't have enough time to carefully consider their choice of subject combinations and classes. Instead, we need earlier preparation starting from junior high school through the school and teachers."
Accordingly, Thanh Chuong 1 High School introduced its facilities, teaching staff, class structure, curriculum, etc., so that junior high schools could understand them clearly. They then disseminated this information to students, helping them gain initial awareness of the career guidance phase at the high school level, as well as the schools they intend to apply to in grade 10. Simultaneously, they provided initial counseling to help students identify their abilities and strengths that align with their chosen career path.
Meanwhile, Que Phong High School (Nghe An province) has been implementing an integrated counseling system for the past three years. This is the only high school in the former border district of Que Phong.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Tu, Vice Principal of Que Phong High School, said that parents in mountainous areas have less comprehensive awareness and understanding of society in general and the education program in particular compared to students. Therefore, the school has prepared a document clearly informing all junior high schools in the area about the types of classes at the high school level and the corresponding elective subjects. At the same time, they distributed opinion survey forms to 9th-grade students.
After students register, they will submit their applications to the school, which will then forward them to the high school. Once students have graduated from junior high school, based on their online enrollment applications, Que Phong High School will analyze the student's data in their electronic academic transcript. Based on this, they will provide further guidance and counseling when students are admitted and officially enroll in the school.

Adjust class groups
According to Mr. Le Hai Nam, Vice Principal of Nguyen Canh Chan High School (Nghe An), when assigning classes and advising students, we will base our decisions on the results of the 10th grade entrance exam, student abilities, the structure of the teaching staff, and future career orientations. The 2025 high school graduation exam and the current announcement of admission plans by many universities show a shift in the subject combinations used for admission. In particular, some universities are gradually abandoning the C00 subject combination for admission to many majors. This is also a point that the school advises students entering 10th grade about.
Mr. Le Hai Nam stated: "The school doesn't divide classes into too many groups, which would make it difficult for students and parents to choose. With the subject combinations, the school calculates them so that students can study and participate in multiple exams simultaneously, such as the high school graduation exam, university entrance exams, and aptitude tests."
For the 2025-2026 school year, Ngo Gia Tu High School (Lap Thach, Phu Tho) will enroll 630 students in grade 10. With the aim of preventing students from having to "randomly choose" subject combinations when entering grade 10, the school has developed a systematic and practical counseling process.
Mr. Trieu Van Hai, Principal of Ngo Gia Tu High School, shared: “In recent years, many universities have significantly reduced or stopped admitting students to social science subject combinations. Meanwhile, natural science subject combinations or other combined methods are expanding. We provide thorough guidance to students so they choose subject combinations not only to excel academically but also to have a higher chance of getting into university later.”
Based on this orientation, the percentage of students choosing science subjects at Ngo Gia Tu High School in recent years has been around 70%. After class selection, the school has a specific plan for teaching and exam preparation. By 2025, the entire school aims for a 100% high school graduation rate. Of these, 473 out of 580 students will achieve 24 points or higher (according to the university entrance exam subject combination), and 54 students will achieve 27 points or higher. In addition, many students participate in aptitude tests, critical thinking tests, or possess international foreign language certificates.
For the 2025-2026 school year, Lang Son Provincial Ethnic Boarding High School will enroll 180 students in grade 10, divided into 6 classes. Starting in early July, the school organized a gathering for all grade 10 students to receive applications and provide advice to students and parents on choosing subject combinations according to the new curriculum guidelines.
Ms. Nguyen Thanh Thao, the school's Vice Principal, stated: "The counseling team not only introduces the program but also analyzes the teaching conditions at the school and career trends, thereby helping students and parents better understand when choosing a suitable subject combination."
A notable point this school year in Lang Son is that the Department of Education and Training encourages students to choose Chinese as their first foreign language. This is one of the important directions in education in border regions, creating conditions for students to access and develop foreign language skills suitable to the local characteristics. "The school has prepared the teaching staff and facilities to organize Chinese classes for 10th-grade students this year," added Ms. Nguyen Thanh Thao.
“During the career guidance phase, students don't choose subjects to get high scores on exams, but rather for future employment and career prospects. We advise students, when choosing subject combinations, to base their decisions on specific career goals that align with their abilities, interests, and the workforce needs of society.”
"Choosing the right subject combination not only helps students reduce pressure and build confidence in their studies during their three years of high school, but also helps them develop sustainably in their careers and in life later on," shared Mr. Nguyen Hong Tu, Vice Principal of Que Phong High School (Nghe An).
