(CLO) Billionaire Elon Musk said social network X was hacked on Monday (March 10), alleging that the computers used in the attack appeared to have digital addresses in the Ukraine region.

Reports of problems with X began Monday morning, with users in Asia, Europe and North America saying they were unable to access the platform, according to tracking site Downdetector.

"There was (and still is) a massive cyber attack on X," Elon Musk wrote in a post on the platform.

Mr Musk shared a post from an account called DogeDesigner suggesting that the latest cyberattack was another hostile attack on him, referencing recent protests against the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) he heads and vandalism at Tesla facilities.

Musk speculates that such an attack would require massive resources and be the work of a nation-state or a large, organized group.

In an interview on Fox Business, he alleged that the computers used in the attack appeared to have digital addresses in the Ukraine region and that X is still trying to figure out exactly what happened.

Cybersecurity experts say it's difficult to assess the situation without looking at X's activity, but the timing of the outage is indicative of an attack.

Problems on the social media platform X left tens of thousands of users unable to access the site for hours, according to monitoring sites. At its peak, more than 40,000 people reported problems, the site said.
