| Minister Counselor Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, delivered a speech at the session. |
On June 26th, in New York, USA, the United Nations Security Council held an open debate on the topic of protecting children in armed conflict, chaired by South Korea, the current President of the Security Council this month.
Former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon attended and spoke at the session, along with representatives from over 80 countries and several relevant international organizations.
During the discussion, most opinions expressed concern about the significant increase in violations against children in conflict, resulting in many children being killed, injured, or separated. This was coupled with the issue of children being forced into military service, becoming victims of sexual violence, and being prevented from accessing humanitarian aid. Many countries condemned the killing of children in conflicts and the ongoing attacks on educational and medical facilities in many parts of the world.
Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, emphasized that the top priority of the international community as well as each country is to address the root causes of conflicts through promoting sustainable development, helping children avoid the consequences of war and violence.
The Vietnamese representative affirmed that ensuring respect for the United Nations Charter, international law, and international humanitarian law is crucial in the protection of children. All parties in conflict must comply with their obligations under international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, including Security Council Resolution 2573 (2021), proposed by Vietnam, on the protection of civilians and essential civilian infrastructure.
To enhance the effectiveness of child protection in conflict, the Deputy Head of the Vietnamese Delegation suggested strengthening cooperation and coordination among member states and relevant UN agencies such as UNICEF, UNDP, and peacekeeping missions. This comprehensive approach helps create a framework that integrates peacekeeping and economic development tasks with child protection before, during, and after conflict.
On this occasion, Vietnam affirmed its commitment to close cooperation with the international community, the United Nations, and other relevant parties in preventing and resolving conflicts, contributing to ensuring a safe and bright future for all children worldwide .
