Deputy Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet, at a ceremony in New York on December 12, asked countries to continue supporting Vietnam as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today.
He thanked the countries that elected Vietnam to the Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term, saying that over the past two years, Vietnam has promoted priorities on protecting vulnerable groups, promoting gender equality, labor rights, the right to health care, and the right toeducation .
Vietnam also chaired resolutions on "Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the 30th Anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action (VDPA)" as well as "Climate Change and Human Rights".
According to Deputy Minister Viet, Vietnam's achievements after nearly 40 years of renovation are the result of the policy of putting people at the center of all development policies, promoting human rights comprehensively, and prioritizing care and protection of vulnerable groups.
The Deputy Minister affirmed that if elected to the Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term, Vietnam will strive to promote common goals, participate actively, constructively and responsibly to ensure better enjoyment of human rights by all people in the world.
Vietnam is one of 14 countries elected by the UN General Assembly as a member of the Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term. This is the second time Vietnam has been elected to the UN Human Rights Council after the first time in 2013, for the 2014-2016 term.
The Human Rights Council, which is part of the UN General Assembly, was established in 2006 and is the UN's most important human rights body. With 47 members serving three-year terms, the Human Rights Council is a forum for dialogue, cooperation and balanced promotion of all human rights and development rights.
