Bac Ninh: Clearing the flow of canals and ditches

BAC NINH - In order to proactively respond to the risk of flooding during the rainy and stormy season, recently, irrigation works exploitation units in Bac Ninh province have carried out a campaign to collect duckweed, waste, and clear the flow of canals and key pumping stations.

Currently, most of the main drainage channels are earthen canals. Many are degraded, with water fern and mud remaining for a long time, obstructing the flow and reducing drainage efficiency, especially after prolonged heavy rains.

Since the beginning of July, irrigation exploitation enterprises in Bac Ninh province have proactively made plans and mobilized maximum forces and means to carry out campaigns to collect duckweed and waste on the entire system of works managed by the unit.

Mr. Hoang Van Tri, Director of Nam Yen Dung Irrigation Works Exploitation Enterprise, said that the unit currently has 125 officers and employees, responsible for managing and operating the pumping stations: Cong Bun, Yen Tap, Co Dung, Tu Mai, Khanh Am, Co Phap, Ghenh Nghe, Tan Lieu. The stations are operated to pump and drain water, prevent flooding for more than 5 thousand hectares of agricultural production and 14 thousand hectares of watershed in the communes and wards: Dong Viet, Yen Dung, Canh Thuy, Tien Phong.

Every year, workers at pumping stations dredge a number of canals under their management. However, most of the drainage canals are earthen canals, silted up, and water fern grows quite quickly. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on dredging to drain water promptly.

Forces mobilized more machinery to focus on dredging canals.

During this time, staff and workers at pumping stations check and maintain equipment; clean drainage canals managed by the unit. Due to the large workload and long canals, many stations increase their staff to work on holidays and mobilize more machinery.

In industrial zones, since mid-June, hundreds of cubic meters of water hyacinth, household waste and obstacles on key drainage canals such as: TQ2, TQ3 of Quang Bieu Pumping Station; T1, T2 of Truc Tay Pumping Station... have been collected and processed centrally.

With a spirit of urgency, up to now, dozens of kilometers of drainage canals for residential areas, industrial parks, and urban areas have been basically cleaned and cleared, ready to drain water during the rainy and stormy season.

Together with the authorities, localities launched "Green Sunday" and the "Clean canals, clear water flow" campaign with the participation of a large number of youth union members, women, militia and people, spreading awareness of environmental protection and proactively preventing and combating natural disasters.

According to comrade Dang Cong Huong, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, in order to ensure the safety of irrigation works and improve the capacity to respond to natural disasters, it is recommended that irrigation works exploitation companies, the Urban Drainage Pumping Center, and Bac Ninh Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Joint Stock Company continue to proactively coordinate with local authorities, relevant agencies and units to regularly inspect drainage canals in the management area.

When detecting an obstacle, quickly clear the flow. Prepare a plan to operate 24/7 to pump and drain, prevent flooding when there is heavy rain, protect production and industrial and urban areas.

Currently, the Department of Agriculture and Environment is coordinating with relevant authorities and localities to survey and evaluate the current status of drainage canals and branch canals. From there, it proposes to the province to renovate, upgrade, and harden some important drainage canals; improve the operational capacity of some drainage pumping stations, ensure drainage, and prevent flooding.
