On the afternoon of October 2nd, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training announced that the incident occurred at Thach Ban High School (Long Bien District).
A male student engaged in inappropriate "teasing" of a young female teacher right in the classroom, in front of many other students.
According to the school's report, the male student in the video is TNMĐ, from class 10A4, and the teacher in the video is MQT (born in 2001), a contract teacher of Vietnamese language at the school. The incident occurred during the break between the second and third periods on the morning of September 27th, in the classroom of class 10A4. The student who filmed the video is KTM, also from class 10A4.
Upon learning of the incident, on the evening of September 30th, the Principal and Vice Principal of Thach Ban High School quickly exchanged information with the Long Bien District Police and contacted the teacher in the video to confirm the incident. The Principal and Vice Principal also discussed the matter with the homeroom teacher of class 10A4.
On the morning of October 1st, the school's administration listened to the opinions of the students in class 10A4, worked with the teacher present in the video, and representatives of the families of the students in the video and the students who filmed it. The school administration also noted the opinion of the homeroom teacher of class 10A4 regarding the psychological characteristics and personalities of the students in the class, including the two students involved in the incident.
After the meeting, the following information was clarified: student TNMĐ was an acquaintance of the teacher from before. This student admitted to having engaged in excessive joking with the teacher and was unaware that their behavior was inappropriate at the time. Student KTM (the student who filmed the clip) also acknowledged that their behavior was wrong, but at the time, they only thought they were filming to tease a friend.
The teacher admitted to lacking professional teaching skills.
During the meeting, the parents of the two students involved acknowledged their children's inappropriate behavior and fully agreed with the school's disciplinary action. They committed to more closely monitoring and educating their children and hoped the school would create conditions for their children to continue their studies and training at the school with peace of mind. The family of student TNMĐ pledged to cooperate with the school in resolving the matter.
Teacher MQT wrote a report on the incident and a self-criticism statement, severely acknowledging her shortcomings in allowing the incident to occur. At the time, she reminded the student to stop the behavior. However, she admitted to lacking knowledge and skills in pedagogical practices, which led to the incident.
The school has also temporarily suspended and assigned a substitute teacher for Ms. MQT while the matter is being resolved. Based on the nature of the incident, the school will continue to review and discipline the individuals who violated regulations, and will do a good job of prevention to ensure that similar incidents do not recur.
Speaking further with Thanh Nien newspaper, a leader of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that although this was just a childish act, an excessive joke by the students, the standards of a teacher and the principles of the profession do not allow teachers to let students act like that, even if it is just teasing. This is also a profound lesson for young teachers who are just starting their careers.
