Breakthrough: Artificial blood is coming soon, transfused to everyone!

Blood transfusions play a vital role in saving lives around the world every day. Japanese scientists led by Professor Hiromi Sakai from Nara Medical University (Japan) have sought to solve this problem.

They have made a breakthrough in developing an artificial blood that is compatible with all blood types. The blood is sterile and can be stored at room temperature for two years.

Clinical trials are underway, and Japanese researchers aim to use this type of artificial blood in practical medical care by 2030, according to The Japan Times.

The artificial blood is created by extracting hemoglobin – an iron-containing protein that helps carry oxygen in red blood cells – from donated blood. The blood is then encapsulated in a protective shell to create stable, virus-free artificial red blood cells.

The artificial blood cells are purple, not red like regular blood, because they are created in a way that they do not oxidize until use.

Notably, the artificial blood is compatible with all blood types and can be stored for up to two years at room temperature and five years in frozen conditions. This is a significant improvement over donated blood, which can only be refrigerated for a maximum of 42 days.

Artificial blood test

Small-scale studies began in 2022 involving three groups of healthy male volunteers, aged 20 to 50, who received one-time intravenous injections of hemoglobin sachets — an artificial oxygen carrier that mimics the structure of red blood cells — in increasing doses, up to 100 ml.

The results showed no significant changes in vital signs, including blood pressure, and only mild side effects. Based on this success, Professor Sakai announced that his team is accelerating the testing process and has begun injecting 100-400 ml of the artificial blood cell solution into volunteers, according to The Japan Times.

The next step will be to test the treatment's efficacy and safety. The project aims to have artificial red blood cells available for clinical use by around 2030.
