Domestic coffee prices continued to rise slightly today, following the recovery in global coffee prices. Domestic supply is becoming increasingly scarce as the new harvest has not yet officially begun. Meanwhile, demand for export remains high, pushing coffee prices up in most provinces of the Central Highlands region.
Vietnam's position on the global coffee map is crucial, as it is the world's largest producer and exporter of Robusta coffee. Therefore, every time Vietnam enters its main harvest season starting in October each year, international organizations release numerous reports and analyses related to the crop.
According to a recent report from Rabobank of the Netherlands, Brazil is gradually surpassing Vietnam to become the world's largest producer of Robusta coffee. Brazil's estimated production this year is approximately 24.7 million bags, each weighing 60kg, a significant increase from the 19 million bags produced in 2020.
Meanwhile, the US Department of Agriculture has given a more optimistic forecast for Vietnam. They estimate that the country's Robusta coffee production this crop year will reach approximately 30 million bags.
When comparing the two main types of coffee, Robusta and Arabica, Robusta has superior biological advantages. This variety is more drought-tolerant, heat-tolerant, and resistant to pests and diseases, while also yielding a larger harvest.
Meanwhile, in another coffee-producing country, Indonesia, this crop year is expected to yield a total of approximately 12 million bags of coffee. Of that, Robusta coffee accounts for the majority, at around 10.2 million bags.
In the first five months of the crop year, Indonesia successfully exported more than 2.8 million bags of Robusta coffee, exceeding the same period of the previous crop year by 163%.
