This afternoon, August 12th, the Quang Tri Provincial Community Development Fund held a workshop to launch the project “Strengthening carbon sequestration and storage capacity in community forestry to enhance climate change resilience of people in Central Vietnam”. The project, funded by CRS (USA), will be implemented in Chenh Venh village, Huong Phung commune, Huong Hoa district from August 12th to September 30th, 2024, with a total budget of over 1.3 billion VND.

At the workshop, delegates listened to experts present the project's objectives and expected outcomes; a new approach to carbon research and community participation; and an introduction to the sustainable forest management training center and forest certification. The project aims to develop pilot models for 779.55 hectares of natural forest owned by smallholders and determine appropriate carbon stocking equations for the pilot forests in the Chênh Vênh community forest, Hướng Phùng commune, Hướng Hóa district.

Accordingly, the project to build a model high-quality carbon forest in Chênh Vênh village will help the local community predict the carbon absorption and storage capacity of each forest type, including 548.88 hectares of forest covered by the agreement on payment for greenhouse gas emission reduction in the North Central region and 149.47 hectares of forest not covered by the agreement, through forest surveys and carbon measurements with community participation.

Updating the sustainable forest management plan of Chênh Vênh village community with the integration of carbon factors, community tourism, etc., with participation aimed at sustainable socio -economic and environmental development for the community. Training to enhance capacity and skills in functional zoning of forest areas for the Chênh Vênh village community, forest restoration planning and silvicultural techniques, and sustainable harvesting of non-timber forest products.

According to the Emission Reduction Payment Agreement between the Government of Vietnam and the World Bank, 10.3 million forest carbon credits (10.3 million tons of CO2 ) will be sold for $51.5 million, and the carbon credit transaction must be completed before January 1, 2026.

Quang Tri province and five other provinces in North Central Vietnam are also participating in this agreement, with Quang Tri province contributing 126,692.40 hectares of natural forest to the project. Globally, the price for one carbon credit ranges from 5 to 25 USD. High-quality carbon credits are not only a useful tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing climate change, but they also help boost the economy for forest owners, develop livelihoods, and contribute to the United Nations' sustainable development goals.
