This afternoon, August 12, the Quang Tri Provincial Community Development Fund held a workshop to launch the project "Enhancing carbon sequestration and storage capacity in community forestry to enhance climate change resilience of people in Central Vietnam". The project is funded by CRS (USA), implemented in Chenh Venh village, Huong Phung commune, Huong Hoa district from August 12 to September 30, 2024, with a total cost of more than 1.3 billion VND.

At the workshop, delegates listened to experts introduce the project's objectives and expected results; new approaches to carbon research and community participation; and an introduction to the sustainable forest management and forest certification training center. The project's goal is to develop pilot models for 779.55 hectares of natural forest owned by smallholders and determine appropriate carbon stock calculation equations for pilot forests in the community forest of Chenh Venh village, Huong Phung commune, Huong Hoa district.
Accordingly, the project to build the Chênh Vênh village forest as a high-quality carbon model helps the local community predict the carbon absorption and storage capacity of each forest status, including 548.88 hectares of forest under the agreement on payment for greenhouse gas emission reduction in the North Central region and 149.47 hectares of forest not under the agreement through forest survey and carbon measurement activities with community participation.
Updating the sustainable forest management plan of the Chênh Vênh village community with the combination of carbon factors, community tourism... with participation towards sustainable community development in terms of economy - society - environment. Training to improve capacity and skills on how to divide forest areas according to function for the Chênh Vênh village community, forest restoration plan and silvicultural techniques, sustainable harvesting of non-timber forest products.
According to the Emission Reduction Payment Agreement between the Government of Vietnam and the World Bank, 10.3 million forest carbon credits (10.3 million tons of CO2 ) are sold for 51.5 million USD, and the above carbon credit transaction must be completed before January 1, 2026.
Quang Tri province and 5 provinces in the North Central region also participate in this agreement, in which Quang Tri province will have 126,692.40 hectares of natural forest participating in the project. In the world, the price for 1 carbon credit ranges from 5 to 25 USD. High-quality carbon credits are not only a useful tool to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cope with climate change, but they also help increase the economy of forest owners, develop livelihoods and contribute to the United Nations' sustainable development goals.
