Developing tourism from traditional craft villages

Double benefit

Recognized as a traditional tea-making village since 2014, Vinh Tan tea village in Tan Trao commune (Son Duong district) has over 85% of its households relying on tea production for their livelihood, with a total tea plantation area of nearly 200 hectares. Mr. Pham Ngoc Thanh, head of Vinh Tan village, said that at one point, it seemed as though the tea-making profession was on the verge of extinction. Fortunately, the province and district implemented policies to preserve and develop it, and Vinh Tan tea village was revived. In recent years, Tan Trao commune has combined historical tourism with experiential tourism in the village. Besides tea production, Vinh Tan residents cultivate tea in concentrated areas, with tea hills pruned and shaped attractively, and the tea is cared for using clean farming practices. Visitors to the village can not only explore the tea hills but also experience tea picking, processing, and enjoying hot cups of tea – all completely free of charge. "Tourists get to experience tea making and buy or give away tea products, which is a good way to promote the products. The villagers are delighted to receive the double benefit from developing the craft village in conjunction with tourism," Mr. Thanh said.

Ms. Nguyen Thu Ha from Hoang Mai district ( Hanoi ) shared that she chose to travel to Tan Trao because she wanted her family to revisit the glorious historical traditions of the nation and to experience the fresh air and the endless green tea hills of Vinh Tan tea village after a stressful period of work and study. She and her family were very happy to pick tea, participate in the tea processing and packaging, and take photos on the terraced tea hills. She bought clean, specialty tea for personal use and to give to friends and relatives. She found this to be an interesting and enjoyable weekend getaway with family and friends at a reasonable cost.

Lam Binh District not only boasts majestic natural beauty, but also preserves the cultural features and traditional costumes of 13 ethnic groups. To develop tourism products, the district focuses on restoring and developing traditional crafts such as brocade weaving. This is a long-standing handicraft that not only serves the daily needs of the people but is now also positively received by tourists.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tiep, a member of the Lam Binh Brocade Cooperative, said that the weaving craft has been passed down through generations in her family. In previous years, her family only wove products like blankets, skirts, and shirts for personal use, but now the demand for brocade products for tourists is increasing. Therefore, households still practicing the weaving craft have come together to form the Lam Binh Brocade Cooperative. Currently, the cooperative receives orders for brocade products from accommodation establishments, homestays, and shops, mainly brocade scarves, pillowcases, and blanket covers. Depending on the product, weavers earn a profit of 200,000 to 1,500,000 VND per item. On average, Ms. Tiep can produce 15-20 products per month, providing her family with additional income.

Timely mechanisms and policies

Currently, the province has 8 recognized craft villages, all of which are tea-making villages in Son Duong district. To develop craft villages and traditional crafts, Tuyen Quang province has implemented many solutions, mechanisms, and policies to support and develop agriculture and craft villages, such as: Resolution No. 03 of the Provincial People's Council on policies to support the development of agricultural, forestry, and aquatic commodity production; OCOP products and new rural construction; Resolution on the development of specialty crops and livestock... At the same time, the province also allocates resources to invest in the development of traditional craft villages such as: transferring scientific and technical advancements; supporting trade promotion and product advertising...

Brocade products from Thang Binh village, Hung Duc commune (Ham Yen district).

Thanks to the province's timely mechanisms and policies, several traditional crafts and villages are being restored and evaluated, such as: the sticky rice cake making craft in Vinh Loc town; the bamboo weaving craft in Vinh Quang and Trung Hoa communes (Chiem Hoa); the brocade weaving craft in Thuong Lam, Khuon Ha, Binh An communes and Lang Can town (Lam Binh); the beeswax painting craft in Khau Trang village, Hong Thai commune (Na Hang); and the processing of fermented fish paste in Trung Ha, Hoa Phu, and Kim Binh communes (Chiem Hoa)...

In particular, every year, Tuyen Quang province organizes a program to display and introduce tourism products and traditional crafts. This program provides an opportunity for businesses to widely promote tourism products, OCOP products, handicrafts, and typical traditional craft villages from localities within and outside the province, contributing to enhancing brand value and preserving the value of traditional craft villages.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tien Hung, Director of the Provincial Investment Promotion Center, displaying typical tourism products, OCOP products, handicrafts, and traditional craft villages during festivals will be an opportunity to promote these products and make them known to many tourists. In the future, the center will strengthen product introductions at trade fairs inside and outside the province; and build product introduction and display points at tourist areas and destinations to ensure quality service for tourists.

To ensure the sustainable development of traditional crafts and villages in conjunction with tourism, Tuyen Quang province needs a workforce dedicated to tourism, support for artisans to stay committed to their crafts, and a promotion of craft transmission; localities should build brands for traditional craft products; and tourism development should be linked, connecting tours and routes to traditional craft villages and production sites.
