January 1, 2025 is the day Dong Son district officially merged into Thanh Hoa city. After 220 years of formation and development, Thanh Hoa city has never had the position and strength like today. On the journey to enter a new era - the era of national growth, Thanh Hoa city is more confident in joining the whole country towards a bright future!
Rising from a poor, small town, heavily damaged by war, Thanh Hoa City has now made great strides in development. In particular, since the important milestone in 1994 when Thanh Hoa Town was announced to become Thanh Hoa City, after 3 decades of transformation, the city has made great efforts to transform from a type III urban area to a type I urban area; from the position of a provincial urban area that mainly plays a connecting role in the province, to become a city with an important position in connecting and developing the North Central region and the South of the Northern Delta, an important gateway to the North and to Laos.
To create momentum for Thanh Hoa City to "transform" into a new period, worthy of the role and position of the provincial urban center of a large province, after 5 times of adjusting and expanding administrative boundaries, on January 1, 2025, Dong Son district officially "joined the same house" with Thanh Hoa City according to Resolution No. 1238/NQ-BTVQH15 of the National Assembly Standing Committee. This historic merger not only created an extremely important milestone in the 220-year historical process of building and developing the city; but also affirmed the correctness and strategic vision of the Central Government and the province for Thanh Hoa urban area. With a population size ranking 2/19 type I urban areas nationwide, a natural area ranking 9/19 type I urban areas nationwide, Thanh Hoa urban area became the 2nd largest urban area in the urban system of Vietnam (after Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai province). “This is an important foundation, creating new position and strength to strive to build Thanh Hoa City into a smart, civilized, modern, and unique urban area, and in the future will become a livable city,” said Secretary of the City Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Council of Thanh Hoa City, Le Anh Xuan.
After the merger, the space is expanded, Thanh Hoa City will develop to the West to connect Thanh Hoa City with the North-South expressway and connect more strongly the development of the economic driving center of Thanh Hoa City - Sam Son City - the Western region of the province; at the same time, develop to the Northeast to form an urban area "on both banks of the Ma River". From there, forming a concentrated, diffuse urban space, connecting three regions: mountainous, plain, coastal Thanh Hoa province with the main idea of "leaning on the mountain - by the river - facing the sea". The model and structure of "belt - radial" is only suitable for small and medium-sized cities, now it is changed to the model of "open belt combined with soft network"; taking the extended Le Loi Avenue as the central axis, taking the Ma River as the urban landscape axis; strengthening urban strips parallel to the Ma River landscape axis and forming belt No. 3 connecting urban strips. Taking the existing urban center as the core, forming an urban structure framework of "3 development axes - 6 centers - 1 natural ecological corridor", towards a large, smart and sustainable urban development.
With a large land fund and undispersed investment resources, the new Thanh Hoa City will have many conditions to develop synchronous and modern infrastructure, develop industry, trade - services, tourism, healthcare, and high-quality education. At the same time, it will create a premise to expand the management scope of urban government instead of rural government; the organizational structure will also be streamlined, improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the political system. With a large scope, the scale of the city's economy will have strong growth. In particular, not only will industry develop strongly with the 3 current industrial parks of Le Mon, Hoang Long, Dinh Huong - Tay Bac Ga, but there will also be new industrial parks and clusters in Dong Son district (old). The city will also have more advanced NTM communes, model NTM communes, more traditional craft villages, OCOP products, exemplary agricultural cultivation models, high efficiency, contributing greatly to the city's economy.
A new era is opening, a period of higher and more comprehensive acceleration has begun. This is an opportunity, but also a challenge, requiring the city to have a higher determination and greater efforts. We believe that a city with a long history and cultural tradition, always having new ways of doing things, breakthrough steps, will have enough determination to take long, steady steps, continuing to conquer the big and important goals set by the Central and the province.
