On the morning of May 24th, Dr. Diep Bao Tuan, Deputy Executive Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital, announced that the hospital had just signed a "Professional Cooperation Agreement with Kon Tum Provincial General Hospital and Gia Lai Provincial General Hospital".
Specifically, the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital has signed a professional cooperation agreement with these two hospitals regarding certain chemotherapy and surgical techniques for cancer treatment.
According to Dr. Tuan, following this signing ceremony, the Oncology Hospital will organize training courses and send experts to provide direct support at Kon Tum Provincial General Hospital. The first technique will be "Subcutaneous injection port placement guided by ultrasound".
As for Gia Lai Provincial General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital has committed to quickly transferring several techniques in June. These techniques will include fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNA/SA), pathology, palliative care, and will then continue with other techniques in the fields of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery.
Dr. Tuan commented: "The signing program with provincial hospitals in the Northern Central Highlands region has been a great success. This program aims to share experiences, provide technical and professional support, help improve the capacity of lower-level medical examination and treatment facilities, and contribute to reducing the burden on higher-level medical examination and treatment facilities."
These signed agreements are developed and implemented under the regional cooperation plan for the period 2025-2030, focusing on several areas such as screening, diagnosis and early detection of cancer, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery techniques, palliative care… along with some activities related to specialized scientific research.
Previously, the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital also signed a professional cooperation agreement with Ba Ria Hospital.
Many patients have to wait for surgery and radiation therapy at the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital.
The second facility of the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital has commenced operations with a capacity of 1,000 beds meeting international standards and equipped with many modern machines. The hospital was expected to alleviate the decades-long overcrowding in the outpatient department of the first facility, as well as shorten the waiting time for radiotherapy patients. However, after only a little over a year of operation, the hospital is already overloaded.
Currently, there are approximately 500-600 cancer patients on the radiotherapy waiting list at the hospital, as well as many patients waiting for their turn for surgery.
Currently, the hospital receives 4,700-4,800 patients for examination each day, with 950 inpatients and approximately 1,000-1,100 outpatients receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Of the patients seeking examination and treatment, 84% came from provinces and cities in the region, compared to only about 75% previously. The number of patients residing in Ho Chi Minh City who visited the hospital remained relatively stable, at around 700-750 patients per day.
