On December 8, the Office of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee announced that the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has officially approved the investment policy for the Ben Thanh - Can Gio metro railway, with a length of about 54km, connecting the city center with Can Gio district. The metro line is designed with a maximum speed of 350km/h and an axle load of 17 tons.
Phase 1 of the project includes 2 stations: Ben Thanh and Can Gio. Phase 2 will build 4 more stations when needed, including: Tan Thuan, Tan My, Nha Be and Binh Khanh. The project has a depot and OCC operation center located in Can Gio commune.
The total land use area is about 328 hectares, of which more than 6.5 hectares of protective forest land are directly affected and more than 118 hectares of railway safety corridor will be restored and replanted according to regulations.
The project is invested by Vinspeed High-Speed Railway Investment and Development Joint Stock Company with a total preliminary investment of VND102,430 billion, excluding nearly VND12,800 billion in site clearance costs paid by the State budget. The investor's equity is VND15,364 billion; the rest is mobilized from credit institutions and other legal sources.
The project enjoys many incentives according to the list of special investment incentive industries, including: exemption and reduction of land use fees, incentives for corporate tax, import tax, along with the ability to access State investment credit and consideration of loan guarantees.
Compensation and site clearance work is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025. The project will be constructed and put into operation within 30 months from the date of land allocation, aiming to operate in 2028 (excluding 4 stations in phase 2).
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee requires investors to ensure financial capacity, fully comply with land, environmental, and fire safety procedures, and strictly adhere to the project schedule. In case of delays or failure to meet the conditions for converting forest land or rice land use purposes, the project may be terminated according to regulations.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the project is consistent with the Ho Chi Minh City Planning for the period 2021-2030, vision 2050, and adjusted master plan to 2040, vision 2060. The metro line is expected to contribute to completing the transportation network, promoting socio -economic development in the Southern and Southeast regions.
Construction of this project is expected to start on December 19.
