This information was given by Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Khoa, head of the Department of Dentistry, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, on the sidelines of the 46th Dental Science and Technology Conference taking place from March 31 to April 2 in Ho Chi Minh City.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Khoa, common dental problems people encounter are tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontitis, but recently, due to modern lifestyles, many people have worn teeth.
In the past, tooth wear was often only found in the elderly or those with digestive problems such as gastroesophageal reflux, but today it is found in many young people due to diet.
"There are many types of sports drinks on the market today. People who exercise often drink this type of water to replenish energy and become healthier. However, this type of water has a low pH, which means it is acidic.
People who have just finished playing sports sweat a lot, are dehydrated, have dry mouths, and immediately drink these types of drinks, unintentionally holding acidic water in their mouths, which can easily erode their teeth," Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Khoa warned.
According to Mr. Khoa, normally in the oral cavity, enough saliva will help protect teeth when the environment has a low pH. However, right after exercising, the mouth is dry but drinking sports drinks with low pH, or drinking orange juice, fruit juice also with low pH, will cause teeth to wear down a lot. However, in reality, very few people understand this problem.
Tooth wear will cause a lot of trouble because when teeth wear, the bite becomes not physiological like normal people, affecting the temporomandibular joint. In addition, when teeth are worn, lose substance, they will no longer function well and especially look unsightly.
If fillings and treatments do not eliminate the cause of tooth wear, the tooth will continue to wear down, easily causing further loss of tooth tissue.
Therefore, to prevent tooth erosion, it is necessary to adjust lifestyle and diet. For people who have just finished playing sports, drinking pure water is best, and should not drink sports drinks or fruit juices containing vitamin C when the mouth is dry.
