Hungarian National Assembly Chairman cuts ribbon to open photo exhibition on Ho Chi Minh City in the early 20th century

Within the framework of his official visit to Vietnam, on the morning of October 19, at the Ho Chi Minh City Museum, Chairman of the Hungarian National Assembly Kover Laszlo attended and cut the ribbon to open the exhibition "Photographs of Dezső - Hungarian Navy Doctor in the early 20th century in Ho Chi Minh City".

The exhibition features photos of prominent buildings in the central area of ​​Ho Chi Minh City that have existed since the early 20th century until today. These include the Municipal Theater (opened in 1900), the City Hall (now the headquarters of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee). Next to them are photos of Catinat Street (today's Dong Khoi Street) or the Botanical Garden (today's Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens).

The exhibition also features photos of Saigon more than a century ago, vividly recreated from the urban landscape to the ancient architecture and the simple life of Saigon people. 23 photos displayed at the exhibition are digital copies from the collection of the Bundapest Museum of Fine Arts - Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asian Art.

Speaking at the ceremony, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council Pham Thanh Kien emphasized that the exhibition contributes to spreading the message "Culture is a bridge of friendship, a foundation for the people of Vietnam and Hungary to understand, respect and bond with each other more."

"Introducing Dr. Dezső Bozóky's precious photos in Ho Chi Minh City also demonstrates our respect for historical memories and cultural heritage, while opening up a new creative space for artists, researchers and art lovers of the two countries to share emotions, experiences and inspire their creations," said Mr. Pham Thanh Kien.

Hungarian Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Lehőcz Gábor said the photos were taken by Doctor Dezső Bozóky in March 1909, when his ship docked at Saigon port on its way back to his homeland. The exhibition is not just a collection of photos but also a cultural journey connecting Vietnam and Hungary.
