Sidewalk renovation project is behind schedule, greatly affecting people's lives

According to the reporter's records on December 7, at the construction site, many sections of the sidewalk were dug up, rocks and soil were scattered, some manholes were not completed, and construction materials were piled up, blocking the walkways. The slow construction has caused the road, which was once considered "green - clean - beautiful", a place with a high concentration of business activities, to become messy and potentially dangerous for traffic safety.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Sa, owner of a restaurant on Hung Vuong Street, said that the sidewalk digging up over the past few months has caused a decrease in customers coming to the restaurant. “Dust and the sidewalk being dug up, to get to the restaurant, you have to build a temporary bridge or spread a tarp. Business has seriously declined while you still have to pay rent. I hope the units will speed up the construction progress to stabilize people's lives and businesses,” Ms. Sa said.

Not only does it affect business, the risk of insecurity also worries people. Mr. Nguyen Huu Tho, a resident of Nam Dong Ha ward, said: "Many sidewalk sections have been dug up for more than two months but are still not finished. Many empty manholes are very dangerous for pedestrians, especially at night."

At the end of 2024, the People's Committee of Quang Tri province approved the project to renovate the sidewalk of Hung Vuong street with a total investment of 126.5 billion VND from the loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB - 110 billion VND) and counterpart capital from the Government of Vietnam (16.5 billion VND). The project has a designed length of 5.04 km, starting from the intersection of Hung Vuong - Tran Hung Dao street, ending at the north of Vinh Phuoc bridge, Nam Dong Ha ward; the sidewalk width on each side is 6m. Particularly, the section from Ly Thuong Kiet street to Dien Bien Phu street will only build sidewalks on the left side of the route, the right side will remain in the current state. The project is invested by the Quang Tri Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board; the implementation period is until September 30, 2025.

Mr. Vo Phong Luan, Deputy Director of the Quang Tri Province Construction Investment Project Management Board, said that due to the prolonged rain, the contractor could not carry out the construction as planned because if the construction was carried out in unsuitable conditions, the quality of the project would be affected. The Management Board regularly monitors information and shares the difficulties of the people. Currently, the unit has requested the contractor to take advantage of favorable weather to mobilize maximum human resources and means to speed up the construction to make up for the progress, striving to complete the project in December 2025.

The slow progress of the Hung Vuong sidewalk renovation project not only disrupts people's lives and affects business activities, but also damages the urban landscape and poses many potential risks of accidents. People hope that the authorities will soon remove obstacles and speed up construction so that the central road through Dong Ha and Nam Dong Ha wards will soon be clear and clean again, serving the local economic and social development.
