Strengthening the fight against IUU fishing, towards sustainable development of fisheries
Speaking at a conference on Vietnam's efforts to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, Mr. Vu Duy Hai, Deputy Director of the Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Surveillance, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , said that the estimated rate of IUU fishing accounts for about 20% of the total global catch, equivalent to 15-25 million tons.
Vietnam is a coastal country with a strongly developed fisheries industry, ranking 3rd in export turnover and 7th in catch output globally. In recent times, Vietnam has participated in many relevant international organizations and agreements such as UNCLOS 1982, FAO, UNFSA, WTO, WCPFC, PSMA, IPOA-IUU, RPOA-IUU..., and at the same time promulgated a legal system in accordance with international regulations on combating IUU.

Currently, Mr. Vu Duy Hai said, Vietnam is synchronously implementing measures to combat illegal fishing (IUU) and develop sustainable fisheries, including registration management and licensing of fishing on the national database VNFishbase; monitoring fishing vessel journeys, electronic traceability; strictly handling violations; digitizing all fishing activities to prevent illegal seafood from circulating, processing, and consuming.
In addition, Vietnam aims to develop responsible and sustainable fisheries through reducing exploitation, increasing aquaculture and protecting aquatic resources; maintaining a policy of not building new fishing vessels and converting fishermen's livelihoods.
